About The Sims
Almost everyone has heard of 'The Sims' at some point in their lives, if you haven't, where the heck have you been for the last 10 years?
That's right, the Sims franchise has been going for a decade now. The Sims, also known as 'The Sims 1' and 'TS1', was first released on 4th Feb 2000 for the USA, and 28th Feb 2000 for Europe.
The game was a spin-off from the extremely popular SimCity series. SimCity was a city simulator made by Will Wright. Will made several other 'Sim' games such as 'SimAnt', 'SimLife', 'SimEarth' and 'SimCopter', all these games had similar open-ended goals. But SimCity was the most popular, and most famous one of all.
Due to the popularity of SimCity, Will Wright decided to take a risk and create a game that was based on the people living in the houses of SimCity. During development, The Sims was known as Project X and Doll House. Eventually the name 'Sims' was made. Will admitted that he at first didn't think The Sims would be as popular as SimCity. But he was very wrong.
In the last 10 years, the franchise has sold over 100,000,000 copies. 15,000,000 of it was the original Sims alone. The Sims soon became a huge success after its release and became the best selling PC franchise of all time.
In 2005, The Sims 2 was released. This was a huge step forward from the previous game and it's seven expansions. The Sims 2 was now a full 3D game, and your sims now grew old and fulfilled their wants and realised their fears. This also became a huge hit and had an incredible build up to the game. It was also a sequel to the first game story-wise with sims such as Mortimer Goth grown up. The town Pleasantview is said to be set 25 years after the original Sims and has some of TS1's families in. The Sims 2 had eight expansion packs, and another eight 'Stuff-packs'.
On 4th June 2009, The Sims 3, a prequel to the original game, was released. Another step forward gameplay-wise as the town is now open for your sims to walk around in without the use of a loading screen. So far the game has one Stuff-Pack and two expansions. The latest one, Ambitions, has only just been released.
In my opinion, The Sims franchise is probably the most precious series of games that EA Games own. Without the Sims, it is possible that EA would go bankrupt.
